January - February, 2008


Unit One: Mother Teresa - Friend of the Poor

* She was born in Macedonia, on August 26, 1910.

* Her parents named her Agnes Bojaxhiu (Boy-ya-jee-oo).

* In 1937, "Sister Teresa" entered the Loreto Catholic Convent in Calcutta.

* In 1950, Sister Teresa formed the Missionaries of Charity, a Catholic order dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor.

* In 1979, "Mother Teresa" was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

* When Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, she had become a symbol around the world of "giving a cup of cold water in Jesus' name.

January 9th

Mother Teresa begins a Home for the Dying in Calcutta.

Focus: COMPASSION (Compassion is caring for people who are suffering as you would want someone to care for you.)

Bible verse: "Then the King will answer, 'I tell you the truth, anything you did for even the least of my people here, you also did for me'" (Matthew 25:40).


January 16th

Mother Teresa remains humble, even after she became famous for establishing a city for lepers near Calcutta.

Focus: HUMILITY (Humility, as C.S. Lewis said, is not a low opinion of yourself, but a self-forgetfulness.)

Bible verse: "It is better to be humble and be with those who suffer than to share stolen property with the proud" (Proverbs 16:19).


January 23rd

Mother Teresa speaks out boldly against abortion and rescues as many children as she can.

Focus: BOLDNESS (Boldness is having the courage to speak the truth even when it's unpopular.)

Bible verse: "We have this hope, so we are very bold" (2 Corinthians 3:12).

Unit Two: Jim Elliot--A Modern Martyr for Stone-Age Indians

* Jim was born in Portland, Oregon in 1927.

* Jim went to Wheaton College, where he was a star wrestler.

* In 1952, Jim followed God's call to share the good news of Jesus with the Auca Indians in the jungles of Ecuador.

* In 1953, Jim married Elizabeth Howard, whom he had met at college.

* In 1956, while attempting to befriend the Auca Indians, Jim and four other missionary men were killed by very people they had come to help. The other missionary martyrs were Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, Roger Youderian, and Nate Saint.


February 6th

As Jim finds follows God's call, he also fulfills a boyhood dream.

Focus: JOY (Joy comes when we know God's will and do it.)

Bible verse: "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence" (Psalm 16:11).


February 13th

Earning the trust of the Auca Indian tribe takes time and patience.

Focus: PATIENCE (Patience means being willing to wait or go slowly in order to reach the right goal.)

Bible verse: "It is better to finish something than to start it. It is better to be patient than to be proud" (Ecclesiastes 7:8).


February 20th

Jim and his four missionary friends are killed by the Auca Indians. Their wives return to Ecuador and eventually lead the village to Jesus.

Focus: SACRIFICE (Sacrifice means a willingness to live--or die--for the cause of Christ.)

Bible verse: "So brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him" (Romans 12:1).
